Lillian Hinton Obituary

On  early Sunday November 19, 2023, Lillian May Johnson Hinton, age 98, passed away peacefully on November 19, 2023. She was born on January 12, 1925, in Hagerstown, Maryland to the late Arthur J. Johnson, Sr. and Charlotte M. Johnson. The family later moved to Washington, DC, where she attended and graduated from the DC Public Schools.

Early in life, Lillian became a beautiful woman of God, who loved the Lord with all her heart, with all her soul and all her strength. Lillian met and married the love of her life, Romeo Hinton.  To this union four children were born. Lillian was the epitome of love, joy and good fun. She was a dedicated mother, who treasured her children and embraced every moment with them.

The family lived on 35th Street, NE, Washington, DC where. Lillian loved  to plan and organize bus trips  to amusement parks  with her family friends, and neighbors.  to such places such as Glen Echo Park, Hersey Amusement Park, etc.

The family attended Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Georgetown,  DC. Later, Lillian and her family continue their fellowship by joining Upper Room Baptist Church in Washington, DC.  They were all baptized.  Lillian became a member of the Willing Worker’s Club and The Gospel Choir.  She would often join several of her family members to fellowship at Ebenezer AME Church, Ft. Washington, Maryland. St. Matthew’s Baptist Church, Washington DC, became her home church and was a member of the Senior Choir and the Deaconess Board. 

Lillian especially loved her favorite role as “Grand-Mommie.”  She always remembered birthdays, graduations and anniversaries.  Play some music and she would be up on the floor dancing. She enjoyed line dancing, the electric slide and was an excellent hand-dancer.  Lillian also had a flair for fashion. Her shoes, purse and do not forget those lovely hats, had to match her outfit. Her favorite color was blue, but since her high school color was purple, she often wore purple. She was also an avid bowler, a member of several bowling leagues. Lillian loved sweets. Her favorites: York Peppermint Patties, Ginger Snaps, Chocolate Cake, Vanilla Ice Cream and Strawberry Shortcake.  Some songs Lillian enjoyed singing were: ‘Blessed Assurance’, ‘I Am Redeem’ & ‘Oh, How I Love Jesus’.

Lillian was employed for several years by George Washington University, where she later retired.  

Lillian Hinton is survived by her four (4) children: Sandra L. Townsend; Rev. Richard M. Hinton (Delores); Catherine M. Nickens; Kevin L. Hinton, Sr. (Cheryl Evans).  Also survived by several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Two sisters-in-law:  Glois Johnson and Lawon H. Underdown and many other loving family members and numerous friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Romeo M. Hinton; sister, Catherine Stringfellow (Thomas Stringfellow Sr):two brothers, Arthur R. & Arthur J. Johnson, Jr. and her parents.

Among those who mourn her passing are many friends & residents of Emerson House in Bladensburg Md. She was well loved, respected and resided for over 28 years.  Later, Lillian became a resident at Doctor’s Community Rehab Center, under the dedicated caregiving and watchful eye of her son, (Kevin Sr).  She received excellent care services, was loved, and treated extremely well by the entire staff.

Lillian May Hinton’s legacy will live on forever through her children, family members and friends. Lillian’s favorite saying was: ‘She was Blessed by the Best!’
