Obituary

To those who accept the precious gift of life that comes from God, our beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend was called home to his eternal rest on February 5, 2025.

Walter Windell Freeman who answered some friends and family by his middle name "Windell" and by his first name Walter to others, was born on October 23, 1950 as the third of seven children to John Allen Freeman and Vivian Virginia Blow Freeman in Portsmouth, Virginia. He attended Portsmouth Public Schools, graduating in 1970, from I.C. Norcom High School. Upon graduation, he worked at the Newport News Shipyard, however, shortly thereafter, he decided to join the U.S. Army where he was assigned to the infantry. After his honorable discharge in 1974, he considered relocating to Boston, Mass, where his older sister Angela Freeman resided with her two children.  However, arriving in Boston in the fall during a cold spell, he quickly reconsidered the relocation and moved to Chillum, Maryland with friends who encouraged him to relocate to the DMV.

He decided to pursue a career as a draftsman and attended drafting school, where he learned the trade, ultimately becoming a certified CAD technician.  He began his drafting career working with Litton Industries for 2years, he was later hired by the Washington Metropolitan Transit Authority (METRO) as a draftsman in the construction department where he worked for 33 years, retiring in December 2009.  His lasting legacy at METRO is the color-coded subway map riders use to maneuver the metro subway system.

It was while working at Litton that he met Cassandra Rone in 1975. He was playing tennis at the LaSalle playground in N.E. D.C. she was listening to the band that was playing in the annual "summer in the parks" program, when he approached her and asked if she was alone, not being very truthful, she said, "yes" and gave him her phone number. Asking "are you sure this isn't the number to the firehouse?", she said "call and find out". Fast forward 3 years after he called they were married (the first time) on July 29, 1978 at the Rankin Chapel on the campus of Howard University.  After 33 years of marriage, they decided to divorce in 2011,to the  surprise of many friends and family. After 10 years of being apart and living totally separate lives and upon moving into her new home in 2021, Cassandra asked Windell to bring items to her new home, he stored at his house in Waldorf. He eagerly agreed to bring the items much to her surprise and complemented her on her new house.  After much soul-searching and discussion, they remarried, at his insistence at the Charles County Courthouse on February 28, 2022, two weeks after he suffered a stroke, again surprising friends and family.  He stated he didn't give a blank what people thought, "I love you and I want to be with you as long as I can."  He is survived by his spouse, Cassandra two sons Jason (Dina), and Jonathan (Ashley), 4 granddaughters, Alexandra, Vivian, Connor and 1 grandson Michael (Jason) and Evelyn (Jonathan), 2 sisters, Angela (Alfred), Charlette of Arizona, and 1 brother, Marvin (Deborah), several nieces and nephews, cousins, close friends from Portsmouth, "the Homeboys". Those who knew him well knew his love for fishing and how he kept a plethora of fishing rods with him even in his beloved pickup truck.  He will be remembered as a man of few words, who loved "fixing things" and his love for plants and music, especially his Bose  speakers, enjoying his backyard and outdoor cooking and grilling and lastly his beloved Redskins/ Commanders.
