Obituary

On Monday July 8, 2024 Vernon Thomas Dixon, affectionately known as Dad, Champ, Grandad, Pops, Old Man, Ugly, Crazy, Big Bank Hank, and Handsome made his transition from this life to live an eternal life with our heavenly father.  We all had our own personal names for him.

Vernon was born on July 4, 1958 in Richmond Virginia to the late Clifford A. Dixon and Queen Esther Edmonds.  At the young age of 5 Vernon's family relocated to Washington DC where Vernon was educated in the DC public school system.

In 1983 Vernon met Cheryl, later they married, and to this union 10 children were born.

Vernon had a strong work ethic, Vernon Started working at the Washington Star at age 15 and he continued working as an adult for the Washington Post and the Washington Times as an independent distributor until shortly before his passing.  He was also a carrier and he would take his children to work with him.  His children enjoyed going to work with him, they all enjoyed that together time and they also knew it would be some food and treats to enjoy after the work was done.

Vernon loved music, he also enjoyed bowling, playing pool, going to the casino, playing tonk, spades and bid whist.  Let him tell it, there was no one that could play better than he did.   He enjoyed watching wrestling, boxing, and had a passion for cars.  But his favorite thing was food,  he was famous for fixing breakfast or seafood.  Vernon enjoyed cookouts and family gatherings, he enjoyed playing around, joking and spending time with his family and he loved steaming crabs, especially for the grandkids.

Vernon made sure he would call his kids and grandkids almost every day, we will all miss our morning calls from Hansome.  Being the big brother, also, he always called to check on his sister, Pamela to make sure she was ok.

Vernon leaves to cherish his memories his spouse; Cheryl Williams Dixon, children; Crystal Middleton (Lorenzo), Steven Williams, Lekeisha Williams, Vernon Dixon Jr., Marcus Williams, Tiana Williams, Tawana Williams, Jasmine Williams, and Marcelles Williams Dixon. Also survived by 21 grandchildren; 11 greatgrandchildren; Sisters; Pamela Dixon, Dorothy Speight (Joe), and Maude Fobs. Brother; Eugene Dixon. A close friend, William Cobb, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other loving relatives and friends.  Vernon is preceded in death by his son; Clifford Dixon, brothers; Nathaniel Fobs (Jerome) and Ossie Fob.

Vernon was blessed with a large and loving family whom all loved him dearly. He will be greatly missed by all of his family and friends who have solace in knowing he is embraced and resting in the arms of our Lord and Savior.  May the memory of Vernon, his laugh, his words, his smile, live on in our hearts for many years to come.
