On Monday, March 23, 2026, Nathaniel Jones, Jr., peacefully transitioned into eternal rest. He was born July 4, 1945, to the late Gertrude and Nathaniel Jones, Sr. He was raised in Washington, D.C., where he attended Ballou High School. He was number two on the track team.
He enlisted in the Navy and bravely served in Vietnam for his nation. During his military service, he was awarded three medals. Additionally, he had the opportunity to visit several countries while on duty. After his service, he worked for the Federal Government and eventually retired from the National Gallery of Art.
He pursued a career as a pilot and found joy in flying planes during his leisure time, particularly Cessnas. Additionally, he had a passion for photography, relishing the opportunity to capture images of nature and his family. He also had a fondness for gardening, where he sometimes cultivated his own vegetables, especially tomatoes.
Nathaniel was a dedicated member of his church, located in Branchwood Towers, the very building where he used to live. Every Sunday, he would read the opening prayer and play the organ. He loved the Lord and his church community.
Nathaniel is survived by his beloved daughter, Charlene (Donald) Smith, along with his cherished grandchildren, Jade and Mikai Smith. He also leaves behind his siblings: Gloria Jones, Betty Ann Summers, Jacqueline Jones, Terry Graham, and Anthony Jones, as well as many other caring relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Darryl and Ronald Jones.
He will always be remembered for his integrity, gentle strength, unwavering faith, commitment to family, and the little daily joys that defined him.
May Nathaniel’s love, laughter, and kindness remain forever in the hearts of his family and everyone fortunate enough to have known him.
