Her Story

Quietly and peacefully, our beloved Mary Frances Benjamin transitioned to her eternal rest on Saturday, June 7, 2025, at 9:35 a.m.

Born on September 6, 1925, in Brevard, North Carolina, Mary was the cherished daughter of the late Zella Gash. From her earliest days, Mary radiated warmth and grace, touching the hearts of everyone fortunate enough to know her. Though her passing leaves a deep void, her enduring legacy of love, laughter, and unwavering kindness will continue to inspire all blessed by her presence.

Mary received her education at an all-girls private school in Asheville, North Carolina. At a young age, she married the love of her life, the late William Benjamin, Sr. Their union was one of deep love and lasting partnership, spanning 45 beautiful years. Together, they raised nine children—four born in Brevard, NC, before the family relocated to Washington, D.C., where five more children joined their loving home.

A devoted homemaker and "domestic engineer," Mary poured her heart into her home and family. She was known for her incredible cooking and baking—her cookies and cakes were legendary and lovingly shared with all who visited. Her door was always open, her table always full. A skilled seamstress, Mary's passion for sewing was often accompanied by singing, and she had a remarkable gift for repairing anything broken—both in the home and in the lives of those around her. Her love was deep, steadfast, and unconditional.

Mary adored her family and found joy in life's simple pleasures. She especially loved watching her favorite soap operas, All My Children and The Young and the Restless, and taking trips. She was known for her humor and her wisdom, often parting company with her trademark phrase: "Don't take no wooden nickels because they don't spend."

Mary Frances loved the Lord. In 1974, she joined Shiloh Baptist Church of Landover, where she served faithfully for decades. She was a devoted member of the Chanel Choir, Circle 4, Sunday School, Women's Ministry, and Senior Ministry. Her servant's heart and willingness to help wherever needed made her a cherished member of the church family.

She was preceded in death by her beloved sons, Lawrence Benjamin and William Benjamin, Jr.; grandchildren Diane, Brian, and Vanessa; sons-in-love John Parker and Byron Rankin; step-father Jethro Pritchard Gash; half-brothers, Jethro Gash and Brownie Gash; and half-sisters Mary McCall and Harriet Taylor.

Mary Frances Benjamin leaves to celebrate and honor her memory: her loving daughter-in-love Joan Benjamin; her children Madeleine Parker, Thomas (Saundra) Benjamin, Gwendolyn Rankin, Gilbert (Gail) Benjamin, Gregory (Delena) Benjamin, Curtis (Renee) Benjamin, and Kevin (Debbie) Benjamin; 23 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, Vistas family, and dear friends.

Though she has departed this earthly life, the light of Mary Frances Benjamin's love and spirit will forever shine in the hearts of all who knew her.
