Reflections of the Life of Mr. George "Leedel" Beatty

George Leedel Beatty, the second eldest child of five children, was born to the late George H. and Maria Beatty on October 31, 1935, in Currie, North Carolina. The family moved from North Carolina to Alexandria, Virginia when George was a young boy. He attended elementary and junior high school in Alexandria and graduated from Parker Gray High School. The family then moved to Northwest Washington D C., where George met the mothers of his children. Bobbye Longe was the mother of George's first child and only daughter, Tamera Longe. George later met and married Addie Berry, and they became the parents of two sons George L. Beatty Jr. and David E. Beatty. George enlisted and served twenty-three years in the United States Air Force. George served as a cook and an enlisted aide to several Generals, including General Daniel Chappie James, the first African American four-star general in the United Armed Forces. Upon retiring from the service, George went to work for the National Geographic Society in Washington DC where he retired after twenty years as a Special Police Officer. George was also a devout Mason for forty-nine years where he was a proud member of the Roscoe C. Cartwright Lodge #129. George had a love for fishing and spent a lot of time fishing with family and friends. It was easy for George to perfect fishing as many often referred to him as having the patience of Job. Charley King, a long-term friend of almost sixty (60) years, and George were more like brothers. Charley said George would sit in one place all day, waiting for that one bite. George was known for not losing faith or becoming frustrated as he patiently waited. Left to cherish his memory are: His daughter, Tamera Longe; sister, Mable Lewis; former wife, Addie Beatty; sister-in-law, Annetta F. Beatty; two brothers-in-law Crayton Jones and John Musgrove; granddaughter, Dejah Beatty; great grandson, David Harris-Simmons; daughter-in-law Tara Cosby & (Doug ); devoted friend, Laverne Morrow who lovingly cared for him. George also leaves a long-time friend, Charley King (Lula); Carl Waithe (Barbara) and many other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents, George was predeceased by two sons, George Beatty, Jr and David Beatty; a brother, James Beatty; two sisters Evelyn Jones, and Helen Musgrove; a brother-in-law Alfred Lewis.

To his daughter, Tamera Longe, who gave me the days off I so desperately needed.

To Carl & Barbara Waithe, (George's Masonic brother for 49 years) who, from across the miles, unfailingly checked in on George over the years.
