Dorothy Mae Garnett aka Dot was born on November 30, 1942, in Alamance County, North Carolina and went to be with the Lord on August 10, 2024 at the University of Maryland Capitol Region Medical Center as the result of respiratory failure. She was the daughter of the late Richard Alston Sr and Myrtle Parrish Alston.
Dorothy graduated from Graham High School in 1961. Following graduation Dorothy moved to Brooklyn, New York to join her sister Marie. Dorothy moved to the Washington DC metro area in 1963 where she settled in for her life's journey. She was a dedicated worker at the United State Senate cafeteria for 30 years until she retired in 2006. Shortly after, she returned to the workforce and was employed by Wal-Mart where she worked until 2013.
Dot leaves her loving memories to be treasured by: three remaining siblings, Marie Dunston, Shirley Alston, and Larry Alston (wife Caroline), daughter, Tracy Stovall of Fort Washington, MD (husband Kelvin Stovall) daughter, Kelly Powell; two grandchildren, Christiana Stovall and Tanesha Stovall (Jordan Gloston), one great grandchild, Zy'aire Onyx Gloston. A host of nieces, nephews and loving friends.
She was preceded in death by husband James Garnett, brothers Blois Alston, Richard Alston, Grady Alston, Willard Alston, and sister Agnes Foust.
Dot was loved and acknowledged as the Will Street neighborhood Mom and will be truly missed by all who knew her and was blessed by her friendship.
