IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Alice B.
Kemp
January 4, 1939 – May 23, 2020
Alice Lee Kemp, beloved and devoted wife to Harry Wesley Kemp, Jr., departed this life on Saturday, May 23, 2020. She was born on January 4, 1939 in Kinston, North Carolina to the late James and Gladys Franklin. After the untimely death of her mother, she received love and nurturing from her stepmother, Tessie Franklin. "Little'n", as she was affectionately called was the third of thirteen children. She was named for her grandmother, Alice. She was a fun and loving child, who enjoyed gymnastics and dancing. At an early age, Alice learned to take on the challenging responsibilities of caring for her siblings. She and her two older sisters stepped in to help with raising their younger siblings. She was educated in the Kinston Public School System. Alice met Harry in Kinston, NC, where he was stationed at Camp Lejeune, NC, when he served in the United States Marine Corp. She moved to Washington, DC, where they dated and later married in June 1966. Although they never had any children together, Alice helped to raise and support other family members' children where she would invite them to come for weekends, extended stays, and summer visits. Alice worked at Woodward & Lothrop "Woodies" as a personal clothier and later worked and retired from the Washington Nursing Facility in the Housekeeping Department, which she also served as the Union Shop Steward. Alice enjoyed working and serving others and believed it was her reasonable service to help others. Alice gave her life to Jesus Christ and was baptized and received the gift of the Holy Ghost. Alice's proclamation was that God is good all the time and all the time God is good! She was very mindful of God's grace and mercies towards her. She served as a faithful and dedicated worker at Jerusalem Church of God in Christ in Washington, DC, where she sang on the choir, was a member of the Missionary Board, and served as the Mother of the Church. Alice's steadfast work for Christ was evident as she shared God's plan of salvation with family and friends, compelling them to come to the Lord. Alice was preceded in death by her stepmother Tessie Franklin; siblings: Ora Louise, Charlie, James Oscar, Dexter, Helen Marie, and Ramona. Alice leaves to cherish her memories: her husband Harry Kemp, Jr.; three brothers: Charles Henry (Betty); William (Shirley); and Tony; three sisters: Gladys Franklin; Pennie Lawson-Bass; and Peggy Bridges; one sister-in-law Mary (Kemp) Williams; a dear friend Lois Stevenson and adopted daughters: Sharon Stokes and Diane Talley; her Jerusalem Church family and a host of in-laws, cousins, nieces, and nephews. Alice had a huge heart. She never met a stranger. She loved her family and friends, and touched all of our lives in one way or another. Words cannot express how much she will be missed.
